What is BNSS Act?

*The National Social Welfare Foundation (NSWF) is raising awareness among the public to make them aware of the BNSS Act!*

BNSS stands for Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (2023).

It is a new comprehensive legislation in India that aims to replace the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) of 1973.

The BNSS seeks to modernize and reform the procedural framework governing the criminal justice system in India.

*Key aspects and objectives of the BNSS include:*

*Modernizing and reforming the criminal justice system:* It aims to address challenges like delays in justice delivery, high case pendency, low conviction rates, and insufficient use of technology.

*Strengthening law enforcement:* It introduces provisions to empower law enforcement agencies to handle crimes more efficiently while emphasizing human rights and just police procedures.

*Protecting citizens' rights:* The BNSS aims to create a legal structure that ensures the protection of citizens' rights, safeguarding individuals from exploitation, harassment, and abuse.

*Emphasizing technology:* It promotes the use of electronic modes for recording statements, collecting digital evidence, and conducting various legal proceedings.

*Introducing specific timelines:* The BNSS prescribes specific timelines for different stages of investigation and trial to ensure speedy justice.
In essence, the BNSS is a significant legal reform that seeks to update and improve India's criminal procedure laws to better address contemporary challenges and ensure a more efficient and citizen-centric justice system.
